Head Coach recognised as Unsung hero

John who was the 2010 North West at nominee was invited to meet Sir Bobby Charlton at Media City the New BBC Head quarters in Salford on Monday 19th September John was asked conduct interviews to camera and for radio Merseyside Manchester Piccadilly radio and print press, talking about his experience as an Unsung Hero, his work in the community and offer his thoughts on the award in general, and his experiences when he attended the Sports Personality awards in 2010.

John was there with Sir Bobby Charlton to mark the opening for nominations for Unsung Hero 2011. Arriving early morning at Media City john and Sir Bobby took a photo call s from Manchester Evening news, Salford Advertiser, Cavendish Pictures, PA Pictures, BBC Internal & BBC OnlinePictures were taken   with Sir Bobby Charlton throughout the day. John conducted   TV & Radio short live   interviews with Radio Merseyside, Radio, Manchester and   BBC North West Tonight –a joint interview with Sir Bobby Charlton about Unsung Hero award and johns work in the voluntary sector teaching the sport of  Handball.  In particular they were keen to explore the experiences of john during his time as the National Great Britain Captain when played in the Olympic Qualifying rounds in 1972 ,1976 and World Handball Championships in 1980and 1984.

During his hand ball career John has taught several thousand players and took his local team Kirkby in Liverpool into Europe as English Champions and has participated in the European Handball federation champions League qualification round on three occasions in the seventies and eighties. John is s the Chairman of the Local Speke Garston Handball Club (who play in the National English Handball League Division 1 North and  Coaches and trains mans and junior teams at  the Garston Village hall Community Centre in Banks road Garston Liverpool L19.

OF his days experience John commented  “ recognising the work of volunteers is very  important, as volunteers who give up many hours of their time to develop and coach in the community and in many cases the they nurture and develop participants  some  who have gone  on to become our sports stars of the future.”

Announced today (Monday 19th September) is the opening for nominations for the BBC Sports Unsung Hero 2011. One of the key awards at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event, BBC Sports Unsung Hero recognizes and rewards outstanding contribution by individuals at the grassroots level of local sport.
